I have known some very fine players who are self- taught, but in general I think a good teacher is a better option.
A good teacher can offer direction, encouragement, inspiration and discipline that may otherwise be lacking.
It is quite easy to develop bad habits as a self- taught player and be unaware that one is doing so. Does it matter how we hold a pick? Do we really need to use the pinky? How about the fretting hand thumb behind the neck? Such issues may not be resolved well without the guidance of a good teacher.
A good teacher will also encourage the student to go beyond their boundaries by exposing them to new styles, techniques and players that may have not encountered otherwise. Good listening habits are essential to one’s development; a teacher can help with that.
And a laugh and smile for some encouragement during the hard and frustrating times can also have great wealth.
